The first half of the book is very good, developing the characters of the two protagonists, Elizabeth Mapp and Lucia, who both want to be running the social ‘show’ in their small community. And their manipulations to try to get the better of each other are good fun to read. But it all gets rather samey in the second half, and then the ending is far too far-fetched.
I haven’t read EF Benson before, and I’d be happy to try another of his books.

Elizabeth Mapp bursting through the door chain will never not be funny.

Meh. No stakes, no characters to love/love to hate, and only moderate joke quality and density. In theory, this has my name written all over it, but turned out to be kind of a slog.

Delicious! How did I get through life without knowing Lucia until last year? And still two of her adventures left to savour.
