A story about bringing together different people but loving them anyway. Three stories are interwoven to produce a lovely story of family, history, and food.

I enjoyed this story, but felt the turn about 3/4 of the way through from Bobby's story to Amelia's was too abrupt and disjointed. Although there were threads tying them together, it felt more like two separate stories rather than one novel.

My husband grew up near where Edna Lewis is from, and his family has read her writings and followed her recipes for years, so I enjoyed the character of Alice, wh0 was modeled on Edna Lewis. I also enjoyed learning more about her in the notes at the end of the book, and I plan to look at her cookbook again and perhaps try out some recipes.

This surprised me in a good way. Judging by the cover and synopsis, I thought it would just be a time-passer that wouldn't really "do" anything for me. But I was captivated by the characters, growing attached to Bobby and sad to leave his story when we switched to Amelia, but becoming equally attached to her. The writing was beautiful but not in a way that you trip over. It doesn't try to out-do itself. Yet there were several times where I stopped and re-read a paragraph simply because it was so poignantly stated. I actually almost missed my train stop once because I was so enthralled. This is a book I'll hold to my heart when I pick it up some years later, not because I'll remember what happened but because I'll remember how it made me feel. All that said, it's hard to end a good book, and this ending was kind of a womp for me. Not the plot twist I was expecting, but the idea I had in my head was much more exciting than what we got. Felt like it was trying to be all deep and profound but it felt forced and sort of disconnected from the rest of the story.

This was a very good book, and I very much enjoyed it, it did tend to go on a bit in places about things we didn't need to know, but I very much enjoyed the rest of the book.
