The slowest book I read in my entire life, I wasn't planning on finishing it but I did. The last few chapters was drastically different from the first 200 pages. I’m giving it 3 stars just because of the last few chapters it was action packed and thats how I like my fantasy. However, the only thing I don’t get is how is this a trilogy the story ended!

I felt this was a little too sappy and cliche for my taste. There was nothing new or different in the story that drew me in.

a fine book that I enjoyed a lot
but where was the plot twist everyone was talking about?
was it the Quinn thing because I was in edge at the beginning looking for clues for the plot twist and I found that really obvious
other than that that I really liked the book, it's mostly political conflict rather than romance but I still loved the slow burn and it was super cute

I enjoyed the audio on this one. The narrator does a great job and it made me want to get my hands on the next book to see where Beaty goes with the rest of the story.

A slow start but the second half was enjoyable. I didn’t realize this was a loose Mulan retelling before starting it but I had the Matchmaker song in my head for the first, 100 pages so the parallels must be pretty obvious. :)

After reading this book twice I have to say it is still on my top 10 list. I loved the world-building and characters. There were some moments when I had to stop and remind myself that Sage was a younger character and thus her decisions, however cringy, would be understandable to make. The large cast of characters made the twist and the understanding of who the traitor is even more enjoyable. Thank you Erin Beaty for this fantastic novel!
