Had this on my bookshelf forever and started it twice before, but I guess I just wasn't in the mood. This time I wondered why I didn't get hooked the first time. Great characters and story.

Great story about two sisters dealing with something very disturbing. Loved it!

This book was very raw and emotional. The things that Marnie and Nelly went through in their lives are truly heartbreaking. The Social Services in Scotland made the decision that these girls were better off with people who neglected and abused them, but were blood relatives, than the people who really took care of them and loved them. The latter were deemed unsuitable for various reasons. Each chapter was told from a single person's viewpoint and the reader had to put the story together. I love books like that. Even though they were really angry with each other at times, the girls stuck together through it all.

Well written but strange plot that constantly had me guessing.

A bleak, disturbing book, but so well written. The opening chapters are kind of devastating, actually. It can be hard to read novels about horrible people making horrible decisions. Even more so when the characters' options are so limited, and always have been.
Two sisters start by describing how they buried their parents in the back yard. The how and why take a while,to be established. Soon, they are taken in and cared for by their elderly gay neighbor, a local pariah. Together, they try to navigate the next year, keeping their terrible secret while trying to remain independent. The story is told in short snippets, rotating among all three characters.
A fast read -- definitely NOT a Y/A book, despite the ages of the characters.

I started out thinking I might not finish this book. I kept reading and I'm glad I did. Well written and I thought the characters were well developed. Loved the ending.
