Tell me if I'm missing something, but the racist, misogynistic and homophobic language seems to serve no function other than being just a detail of Tennessee, and it's never criticised or commented upon really. McCarthy's prose, especially description, is gorgeous still.

Semi-autobiographical novel in a discursive format that's quite different from McCarthy's now-famous capsule style. "Ulysses"-inspired to the point of namedrops, and a detailed picture into the southern Appalachians in the 1950s.
