This was a humorous memoir that does not hold back.  Busy shares her life with us, the good and the bad, from her early years through present day.  She narrated the audiobook, so you get to hear her story directly from her.

YOU GUYS! I love a good memoir, and I love @busyphilipps, so is it any surprise that I also loved “This Will Only Hurt a Little”?? Like a lot???

If you’re not familiar, Busy Philipps is an actress/talk show host/mom/Instagram stories star/(in my head) my best friend (it’s very normal and not at all weird, thank you very much). Busy’s Instagram is endlessly entertaining, so it should come as no surprise that her book is too. She manages to be both hilariously lighthearted and insightful at the same time, all while chronicling her journeys trying to make it in Hollywood.

Real talk: There are some seriously vulnerable moments in this book. Busy opens up about problems she experienced growing up, struggles in her marriage and with being a mom, and dealing with douchey actors/producers (looking at you, James Franco). She manages to weave the stories together in a way that feels authentic. Busy’s personality is 100% present in this book. Like she writes in the book, she may be too much for some people, but that’s too bad because they’ll miss being seriously entertained by this book. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you can listen to the audiobook, I suggest that. She reads it herself and does a fantastic job. I’ve only ever seen her in a few things, and her characters weren’t my favorite, so I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about her book but it was awesome. She is awesome.

Not gonna lie, she cries a few times in the audio book and I found myself tearing up also.

Honestly, this is more 4.5 stars! This book is amazing. I love understanding Busy’s experiences in the film/tv industry and also from her childhood/personal life. She has such an authentic voice and seems truly uncensored in the retelling of events from her life. I love that she used the real names of the people in her life - it provided an even deeper understanding and for me personally, a deeper appreciation of some of those individuals (like Michelle Williams). As a fan of her on Dawson’s and ER as well as her social media presence I loved learning more about her life in a very entertaining and honest way. Listening to the audio book along with reading was INCREDIBLE. Hearing her own voice tell her own stories truly added to the experience and I’m so glad I made that choice. I highly recommend, even if you aren’t familiar with Busy. You’ll want to be after reading.

I devoured this book. Both entertaining, enlightening and brutally honest in her Busy like delivery. I enjoyed her Instastories for awhile now and it is the same voice. How she talks about mental health issues is very honest. I would not be able to handle the rejection she has handled in the Hollywood industry. Yet, I think it only made her stronger. Highly recommend the book.

Would recommend the audio book over the hard copy - her writing style is very close to how she talks and so it doesn’t read easily but works a treat when she is narrating it
