Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures by Merlin Sheldrake

4.5 stars—I really enjoyed this one! More than I thought I would, actually. I was impressed by Sheldrake’s application of what I studied in college feminist science studies classes (although I wouldn’t say the book is explicitly feminist), even quoting Donna Haraway at the beginning of one chapter! The shift in perspective from mainstream science was so refreshing and exciting. I loved all the ambiguity and messiness of it, and learned so much about fungi and our world along the way.

Very interesting read about fungi and how they connect and influence so many parts of the world. The book was fascinating and a good listen. It talked a lot about how we sometimes anthropomorphize nature in an effort to understand it better, but that nature is not human with human motives. If you like books like Gathering Moss or (my favorite nature book ever) The Hidden Life of Trees, you may like this book. There is a pleasant romanticization of fungi that makes me appreciate all the previously somewhat boring lichen, mushrooms, and molds that I encounter frequently.

Fascinating book of the amazing world of fungi. The section on yeast is too reverential of alcohol consumption for my tastes. And there is a fair bit of rambling. As an intro to the complex world of fungi and mycelium it's very good.

It was interesting enough to keep reading and Merlin clearly is very passionate about his work and presents it well. It wasn't close enough to my normal interests that I could consistently follow it but if you're in the mood for earthy nonfiction, I would recommend.
