It took a couple of chapters for me to get into, most likely because I'm not used to reading verse narrative, but by the end, I was blown away by this. It's a novel that forces you to read aloud, such is the rhythmic intoxication. It skips along at quite a pace. The writing is sublime and the story is perfectly executed. I expect the translations make a big difference. I read Johnston, which worked well for me.

Honestly found it pretty hard to follow at first but eventually I started to follow the plot and definitely enjoyed the story. Im not really into poetry but there where definitely some sections where I almost felt mesmerized by the words and the rhymes. Unfortunately this was constantly broken up by sections that felt pretty clunky and not fluid but that may have just been cause of the Russian to English translation.

The way Pushkin talks directly to the reader and has so many visual details reminds me of Dickens. I liked this very much.

I enjoyed the lovely poetic imagery and my rhyming translation, and laughed aloud at the self-insert author's wry observations, especially at the young ladies' memory albums...and of course their feet. As for the story, I couldn't get myself as emotionally invested as I wanted. Everything peaks fairly early on, and I found myself reading for the author's voice more than anything. I do hear that the opera version is fantastic and I would love to see it, but I feel I might have breezed too quickly through the audio version, wonderfully narrated as it was. Perhaps someday I'll try again, in print, and see if it hits me harder.
