Another shounen manga (or at least classed as such) that I'm willing to read. It's actually really interesting in the sense that I really want to know more about Tatsuya, since his abilities are fascinating. There's a lot of info dumping, but it has a certain draw. Not only is it set in the future and about magic that involves technology, Tatsuya is a character who is treated as inferior because he 'lacks' conventional and tested magic practical skills. But actually, his abilities lie elsewhere, which is why I'm so sucked in! Even though the setting is your conventional manga setting, a highschool, exclusive, with separate divisions (magic excelling users and then the not so brilliant magic users which is where Tatsuya is) and with the usual manga events. However, what I like about this manga is Tatsuya. He's a character who doesn't display much emotion except towards his sister, and while seemingly someone who does not have many magical abilities, is a mysterious beneath the outer exterior, and as the chapters go on, each layer is peeled back. Still, I still wonder about him, and therefore can't wait to keep going!

I love the anime and manga of MHS - I wanted to give this five stars, but it's more like 4.5 because of the rather awkward translation. I guess I'm used to Stephen Paul's fantastic work on Kawahara's novels, which is absolutely beautiful. That aside - this is a fantastic science fiction drama. Yes, the brother/sister thing is weird but . . . well, there's so much more to it than that.

only a few particular subsets of people are going to enjoy this book, i just happen to be in one of those subsets (nerds who like infodumps). so far i’m thinking the best practice is to both watch the anime and read the light novel, as combined they seem to be better than the sum of their parts.
