This book started out with a bang as a prince and the one they call the midnight merchant end up fighting a shadow jinn and from there the story takes off. Told from multiple viewpoints, it’s a story of adventure, loyalty, and finding out who the jinn are. There were a few times I thought it was a tad slow but overall I really enjoyed this book! Can’t wait for the sequel because that ending!

It was meh. Like it was ok. I don’t know. I think my main issue was the pase and how quickly things started and resolved. The landscape of this book was confusing. 90% of the time they are in a desert, and then suddenly then come upon a city surrounded by waterfalls and lakes. Then they leave the town and back to desert. It was just weird writing. I will not be reading the next.

I really liked this book. It was suspenseful and kept me hooked. I liked the setting. I've never read a middle eastern/arabic based fantasy and it was refreshing. I liked most of the characters, though I do think some of the characters were too similar.
SpoilerE.g. Loulie and Aisha were both badass women who become independent after their tribes are killed. Or Omar, Ahmed, and that thief guy (forget his name, the guy near the end?) are all cocky (you can tell because they always smirk!!) yet arrogant killers. Mazen and Qadir are unique and I loved them the most.

I liked that the book let plot points unfurl and allowed the reader to connect the dots, but honestly, I could have done with a little hand holding. I was a bit confused when it came to timelines/identities since they shift around so much in this book.
I am super excited for the next part!!
