This was a quick, entertaining story that had a fantastic eerie atmosphere to it. It reminded me a lot of The Green Ribbon.

The first Coover I ever read was his Briar Rose, and I still have a soft spot for his versions of fairytales. I ALSO have a softspot for the Juniper Tree and its derivations.

This is probably only a four star story, but it's ticked all my boxes and I'm giving it 5

Equal parts creepy and fantastical made even stranger due to lack of the narrator's objective thoughts on the events occurring in the story.

The boy was buried alongside his mother under the crabapple tree, and that was also sad, but the little boy had never quite seemed part of this world in the first place, so it wasn’t as sad as when his mother died.
