Better than the first book, but be sure to read IQ before you crack open this one. Crazy plot, but lots of growth for IQ, Dodson and even Deronda. I’ll definitely read whatever comes next in this series.

A new I.Q. book every year? What an embarrassment of riches! Isaiah Quintabe (I.Q.) has, in the space of two books, become one of my favorite fictional detectives. Along with his partner/sidekick Dodson, he gets himself into some hair-raising scrapes. Add in a good dozen well-drawn and ethnically diverse characters, dialogue worthy of Elmore Leonard, and a seeming understanding of street level crime, Joe Ide is riding the crest of a wave.

This book has two plots: I.Q.'s investigation of the death of his brother, and helping out a hapless couple on the run from loan sharks and the Chinese mob. Not only does it continue and deepen the story from the last installment, but it sets up more stories to come. So many series characters set the reset button with every new adventure, but it's refreshing to see a hero who advances his horizons, while exploring his past.

Faster paced than previous. More jumping around, lots of retelling the same episode from another point of view, but he keeps it short and never feels unnecessary.

OOOoooeeeeee!! I think I may have found a new series and a new private eye hero.

Joe Ide's main character is Isaiah Quintabe, a very solitary guy who is still grieving the hit and run death of his brother ten years ago. When his brothers girlfriend asks for his help, his unrequited crush on her comes back full force.

Written in the way of most private eye series, this second in the series develops characters very well while maintaining the suspense of the mystery right up until the last page.

I will have to go read the first one now.

I loved IQ and I wanted a little more of his "Sherlock" powers like the first book. The second novel is a pretty good follow up but so much stronger language and goes into a bunch of gang stuff that was annoying. Also the audible was a little hard to follow with some flashbacks and moving around of the timeline. I still look forward to the next.
