This book has some good information, however, in the audio version the author sounds like a used car salesman. The content in this Content Inc. book isn't ground breaking or new -- I've heard it all before. May be a good book for a small business starting out on it's marketing journey, but not so much for corporate marketing folks who have been in the business for a while (HINT: We should already know that content is king).

I have some peeves about this book including the author saying things like "The Content Inc. Strategy" instead of recognizing that these are strategies in content marketing that companies of many sizes have been using for a while now. This is a little misleading. I guess that's "marketing", but it bothers me enough that I roll my eyes every now and again while listening to this.

His first analogy between being a small business in a big business world and David and Goliath was a little weak and tired, however, he follows-up with some case studies that are interesting -- so far this may be the gold in the book for me. Personally, I would rather have bought this on paperback so I could skim through most of the sections.

I'm reviewing now in case I decide not to continue on with the book, which is possible. Listening to it takes way more time than I want to invest in the content provided and I don't want to pay more money for a paperback.

Content Inc. is a great inside look at how companies in a digital world gain traction in a competitive market. This will be a good resource to come back to in the future if I ever dedicate more time to a blog I've always wanted to start.

If I had read this in 2015, I'd likely give it 5 stars. However, the digital world is a rapidly changing environment, and some of this content is already a bit dated. Also, some of the opinionated suggestions I didn't completely agree with.

Overall good book that you can learn something new from.

This is a very useful read which is a way to say that this is a guide to building a content business model, step-by-step. Took me a little bit of effort at the beginning because some of the initial concepts are really basic or something I already knew. That said, they are necessary, and as the book progresses you can see why they mattered.
If you are thinking about launching your own content business, then this book is a must

There are awesome tidbits of info in here! I've already started a business so a lot of this is basic knowledge and could've been skipped but the last half of the book made it worth the read. There's some great advice in here that I will definitely refer back to.

I started strong with this one and then lost steam when we started getting to monetization.. clearly I like the content creation part, but not so much the business part :)

Excellent book. It's especially inspiring for content-oriented entrepreneurs, but there are also valuable lessons here for folks working within organizations of all kinds. This goes beyond a simple book on content marketing to offer a different way of thinking about startups and brand and product management for small businesses. It's hard to resist the optimism that suffuses this book -- and why should you? I genuinely enjoyed spending time with this book. Highly recommended.

I read the second edition, which came out in 2022. This is a great resource that has all of Joe's teaching in one place, all laid out in logical, sequential order.

A few ideas worth exploring at work, but not much of a book.

The beginning David and Goliath story almost scared me off. I am weary of old biblical stories relating to business concepts. However, the book moved on, and got into some really good ideas and topics.

It was a little too cheesy to earn a 5 star, but I would recommend this book to anyone who could make their way through it.
