I know this is supposed to be funny, but I didn't smirk at all. Maybe because I'm not a young boy. I don't get why a kid screwing up all day long is a book that is so popular. I guess a lot of kids could relate to it. Having a bad day, getting blamed for things that were accidents... Just not my cup of tea.

You can tell by the way Big Nate is packaged that somebody - probably lots of somebodies - are hoping that Nate will slot directly into the "If you liked Diary of a Wimpy Kid" list. I won't keep you in suspense. It will.

Nate starts his day with a statement from a fortune cookie saying that he will "surpass all others". In what area he will surpass all others is part of what is so funny. This is for every kid who has gotten into trouble for something they think they didn't do and for every teacher who has a Nate in his/her class. Even this principal couldn't stop laughing at the end. For fans of A Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

1.5/5 I picked this up because I thought the comic strip style would appeal to some of my reluctant readers but I was disappointed by the incredibly basic plot - boy hates school, boy says horrid things about his teachers and classmates, boy ends up in detention a lot - I can see how it would appeal to a very narrow demographic among 9/10 year old boys but I wish it encouraged more positive behaviour for them. All boys don't hate school, enjoy rough play with friends and fancy girls in their class! There are some humorous moments (the world record attempt and Nate's poetry page were fun) that give me some hope for the rest if the series but I won't be reading on to see if it improves and I won't be recommending these to my pupils either.
