Another entry in the Hill House Comics series, this story is set at the turn of the century and follows a young girl who gets mixed up in the world of the supernatural.
What I did love about this story was the strangeness and the hallucinatory quality of Daphne's friend (who only she can see). The writing and art leans into the Gothic aesthetic, and I am a huge fan. The visuals did a great job of leaving me in that liminal space where I wasn't sure if it was really happening or if it was all in Daphne's head.
The story had a few threads (her mother is being scammed by a medium, the mean girls at school) that didn't feel like they quite meshed together into a satisfying plot. Maybe it would have benefited from a few more issues so everything could have a bit more meat on its bones.
The cover art though, holy wow. I would buy all the issues again just for that art.

Another quick story arc from Hill House Comics. There was a lot packed into this story, from mediums and opium dens to a Rosemary's baby-type scenario, and the images were artfully gruesome and affective, however; many themes were introduced but not given the time to be explored in any meaningful way. I found the story entertaining, but nothing that will stick with me.
I received a copy of this book as an early review copy from NetGalley and DC Entertainment. All opinions are my own.

I am loving all these horror comics in the Joe Hill curated Hill House Comics catalog.
This one is Victorian, dark, deeply disturbing, and a nice little twist or two at the end.

The story was nothing special and I wasn't crazy about the art. It felt like the way the characters looked changed just from panel to panel. Also, how old was Daphne supposed to be? At times she seems like a little girl, and others she's at least a teenager, and sometimes she looks downright old. ?

3.5 Stars.
This story was really frustrating. A lot of it made me mad. I really didn’t understand the ending, and quite a few other things. I also hated the artwork. I can see why this is the lowest rated installment in the series.
Book 19/30 for 30 Books in 30 Days.
