this book is a character study of a few different people living in boston, including claudia, a women's clinic counselor; timmy, her weed dealer; and two racist, pro-life zealots whose POVs i recognize but really didn't care for. like some other reviewers have said, i wish the entire book had been from claudia's POV, since she was far and away the most interesting and fully fleshed out character. the ending fell flat for me as well, since there was a lot of buildup to a shocking event that didn't end up happening; it seemed a bit anticlimactic. also, women aren't the only gender who can get pregnant, and this was touched on briefly and then never mentioned again!

however, mercy street shines a light on the important topics of pregnancy and abortion (and taught me a few things that sex ed didn't, such as how much an abortion costs), which was somewhat refreshing to read in a contemporary novel.

thank you to ecco books for sending me this ARC!
