really beautiful on a sentence level. i think the question of art vs terror is interesting/relevant, especially as art sort of becomes more so a form of entertainment and numbing rather than something meant to profoundly move an audience.

Even though I quite like DeLillo, this one was a bit of torture for me. Wait, no, torture is the wrong word. Mao II is 240 pages of self-indulgent mind-masturbation, with every voice moaning the name of the author. To be honest, the only enjoyable parts were the beginning and the end, everything in between is more or less forgettable. I may or may not read more of DeLillo's work, seeing that most of his books are quite well-received, but Mao II was a definite miss for me.
Too bad, but you can't win over everyone.

My general take on DeLillo - brilliant framing, strong interesting plot, insightful social commentary and then there's the heaviness and boring musings of generic middle-aged man's sexual life.

And then DeLillo knows what the Twin Towers stood for -

First delillo book I’ve read so it took some getting used to. The character work was really cool and I had them all visualised really well it was just the plot I found quite difficult to follow. Interesting tone. Some bits were a lot more engaging than others.

Exciting almost mystery novel that is scarily accurate in it's foresight of events in American.
