A memoir about organ transplant might seem a little odd at first blush. And this is an unusual book about an unusual circumstance and an unusual person. I don't think I've ever even heard a story about organ donation from the donor point-of-view, and definitely not when the donor was a stranger to the recipient. This is called, I learned from this book, altruistic donation.

The book follows Ellie through the process from inspiration in the form of meeting a young woman who is living with kidney failure through her eventual donation of a kidney to a person she had never met.

I learned a lot about how convoluted the process can be, and how low the likelihood of success is even now, with our progress in the process and the drugs that should help with organ acceptance. I was surprised to find out how long it takes, and moved by the incidental stories of all the people that Ellie's life intersected with along the way.

An inspiring story, to be sure, and a reminder about the ripples our actions send forward into the world and the opportunity we all have to affect positive change.

This is the most amazing book I have read in a very long time. Eldonna is the most caring, giving, unselfish, loving human that I have the pleasure of being acquainted with. She had a mission and it seems no one was going to stop her. The ultimate gift. Being a living organ donor is something most people never think about. How it saves lives and changes families who may lose someone they love dearly.

I had never giving organ donation much thought until my youngest brother needed a liver transplant. He was not so lucky but that was his own fault. He did something to mess up getting the organ he needed to live. I learned so much through his experience being that my sister and I would have been his caregivers. What Eldonna did was to me absolutely the most wonderful.

This book made me do some serious thinking, lots of crying and quite a bit of laughter in parts too. To be so unselfish is a quality that not to many think about. But it does happen. I met two ladies via facebook who were the giver and recipients of a living organ. They became the best of friends after that. It touches my heart to read things so good. With all the sadness in this world it’s so good to read something like this.

I highly, very highly, recommend reading this wonderful book.

It’s a HUGE 5 stars from me and a big thank you to #Eldonna Edward for sharing her journey.
