enjoyable read though i would have liked a more drawn-out burn towards the end. i do feel like the ending was a bit rushed and would have like to see some more pining by logan after madeline starts to push back. this one tugged at my heartstrings with the moments of seemingly unrecquitted love and callousness after the initial conflict. overall though, an enjoyable, classic romance!

While the writing and lovers' tension certainly meets the author's usual standards, the man in this story, Logan, was unforgivably awful to Madeline after her "plot" was uncovered. The threats he made and the way he treated her were abusive regardless of his fear of vulnerability or how badly he was treated as a child. I finished the story hoping that his disgusting behavior would stop at every page, and it just kept going and going... Some of the sex between them (before and after Logan knew about her "plot") continued against Madeline's wishes, as well, which is not a style of romance I'm attracted to.
When she finally told him off for good (but didn't have to follow through because of course at that moment he finally decided to correct his heinous treatment of her), I was overjoyed, but it shouldn't have taken that long. And what kind of lady friend would keep telling Madeline to "just be patient" with him as he continued to shower her with coldness? Ugh.

Not one of Kleypas' better stories.
