3.0

I liked this a lot less than The Passage. Its plotting wasn’t as tight and it felt sloppier overall - nothing felt as clear or well thought out, and it seemed like a lot of the characters were simply there because they were in the first book, not because they mattered to the story.

2.75

2.75 feels generous, but I'm feeling magnanimous today.  Aside from Cronin throwing in absolutely unneeded transphobia, “character development” for a female character via sexual assault, and action sequences that dragged on, it was still somehow captivating. Even though I wasn’t all that jazzed on this world he built of seemingly only cis, straight, white, and quasi-Christian folx, I pressed on and am endeavoring to complete the trilogy if for no other reason than I am a stubborn bibliophile.
