Often classics are quite predictable, as they have shaped so many other works. However, 1984 still captivated me and had turns I couldn't predict.

This was great. I loved it. But it also gave me an icky feeling because of the content in the book and the climate of the world today. EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE needs to read this book.

On my second read of this book (alongside the retelling, Julia by Sandra Newman), I still enjoyed this story and think it's just as horrifying. However, I think I missed all the ways Winston was pretty horrible to read the first time. His rage and hatred toward Julia (dreams of killing and raping her), his betrayal, etc. seemed more like a weak character this time. Yes, I'm sure it's representative of the themes Orwell is trying to make about how the Party affected people's psyches, but it was disturbing also. There is also a huge chunk in the middle of the book that just reads as a textbook of the Party's ideology. Most of the book is Winston's repetitive inner turmoil, plus the political rambling, which read pretty slowly.

Honestly, Julia is a much better version of 1984 and you get the exact same world and plot (I tandem read them and Julia perfectly fills in the gaps with her thoughts and experience of the world, while keeping the original content)

It is a beautiful novel knowing how beauty is subjective. One of the best dystopian novels i have read which just wrenches your heart. I love the way it ends. It makes one feel so incompletely complete; if that even makes sense.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this story of dystopian world.  This book discusses many issues that are relevant to today’s society. A lot of ideas from the book made me think about how easily things can happen if someone has enough power, understands manipulation, and knows human psychology.
