Angela Johnson, receiver of the Michael L. Printz award, writes an inspiring book about baseball. The main character’s Grandma shares her story of how she was grown to love baseball. The grandmother’s father would teach her how to play and although she can hit, run, and play well, just like Josh Gibson. However, she wasn’t allowed to play with the other boys because she was a girl. Except one day, she finally got her chance to play and show how amazing of a player she is. Josh Gibson was a famous baseball player on the Negro Baseball League and this historical fiction book can engage readers in learning about baseball more and the different leagues. Although the story takes place during the 40's, the characters show how it is possible to break through stereotypes regardless of age and gender.

This book is appropriate for students grades three to fifth and a possible way to use this book in class is through social studies. Students can compare and contrast the gender "standards" of certain historical time periods they've learned in social studies and discuss how they can break those standards.
