Pretty Girls is the first Karin Slaughter book I have ever read and it might be the last. Not because it’s a trashy thriller book with graphic violence, but because it’s a poorly written, trashy thriller book with graphic violence.
I’ll start by saying this book is not for anyone who is sensitive to violence, sexual violence and torture, or rape. There are a LOT of scenes where the author drags out descriptions of these acts on women. The first time we experience this plot point is shocking and effective for the story. Where the author runs into issues is she explains this same thing over and over and over again throughout the book. It gets tiresome and over done, and the shock value is no longer in effect.

Secondly I found that the character development lacked significantly and the dialogue between the two main characters SO TEDIOUS. I feel like the author was trying to convey a sibling dynamic but it was so beyond annoying to read them go back and forth at each other over the same conversation for pages and pages and pages.
This book is a trashy thriller, so don’t expect anything mind blowing. I just wish it was a better trashy thriller.

wowza, that was intense. and super fucked up. also incredibly heartbreaking.

definitely be mindful of the content warnings before jumping into this one, but in all honesty it didn't seem any better or worse than, like... an episode of criminal minds or law & order. (then again, i did read the slob so maybe i'm just desensitized to reading about violence.)

but the heart of the story is the fractured relationship between two sisters - claire and lydia. i was super invested in both their POVs as they navigated the mystery of their eldest sister's disappearance together. sam's letters to julia broke my heart. the grief and being unable to move on due to lack of closure was done super realistically in this novel.

as for the actual mystery part, it was... meh? as i've stated in other reviews, i am (unfortunately) incredibly good at predicting things so 60% of the plot twists i had pretty much already guessed, but again, i was really intruiged by claire and lydia's story together, so that really kept me frantically page-turning to see what would happen next.

overall, i really enjoyed this book. the graphic violence against women was a little excessive though, i'll admit.
