The love story just didn't work for me. Many of the flashbacks didn't seem relevant. The parts of the book I enjoyed were the descriptions of Antarctica.

I loved the description of Antarctic. The details of the marine life. The dangers of visiting this continent. It was my favorite part. The story of the romance was interesting too. Two things took away from this story and that was the jumping around from current day to 20 years ago in no order which was frustrating. The other thing was the way an event took place that was so close to a movie that it didn't feel right.

The Antarctic ecosystem and its powerful pull for some humans is the center of this story.

Non the most lovable main character. You really want to shake her multiple times. There are definite dry spells throughout the book where the prose is slow and you lose interest. Overall, I found the book well researched, and the non-fiction scientific side was a neat addition. I did like that in the end, things didn't work out perfectly. In real life, things aren't always perfect, people die or leave or don't work out. I appreciated the reality of the ending, even if it made me sad.

A spectacular setting (Antarctica) plays host to a generic romance. I don't think I'm the target audience for this.
