This book was not my cup of tea but if you are in the mood for a dramatic classic style romance this is for you. I found the main characters very irritating because of the sexism and backwards thinking. I found the male love interest to be unattractive due to some of his personality traits but he may be more attractive to others if you prefer a very domineering man who likes to sleep around.

*sigh*

I read this for the 'Historical Hellions' March read. I did not enjoy it 🤣 I am all up for some old school romance novels with the melodrama and sometimes questionable occurences but this....🤦‍♀️

Dougless the heroine (weird ass name) is just plain awful to the point where I hated her. She was beyond infuriating and hate the appeal of a wet tea towel. She is in an awful relationship with a complete douche and consistently gets walked all over because she is hoping for a marriage proposal. 🙄 When her boyfriend dumps her, Sir Nicholas is magically bought from the past. She agrees to help him find out who betrayed him in the past leading to his execution. They then fall in love, or so we are told as neither of their actions indicate this. Half the time, the 'hero' is off with other women.

I know it was written in the 80s but the author describes Dougless's clothes and styling like she is my nan. I'm pretty sure she thought that all women in England dressed like Mrs Marple. American's portrayal of England 🤦‍♀️

Dougless also randomly travels back to Elizabethan England and finds that Nicholas has forgotten her. This in itself makes the whole first half of the book completely pointless. We could have just started the story here and saved us all alot of time.

Dougless whilst believing the hero has a wife that he loves, still sets out to seduce him. That's a no no from me. She also doesn't improve as the story progresses. The love between the couple does not feel as epic and true as the author thinks it is. It makes little to no sense.

The author was also obsessed with weight and body image. The fat phobia definetely shows through.
