Spark of the Everflame opens this series with interesting characters, a strong story, and lots of threads I want to see get tied together.

I really enjoyed reading this book! I read most of it in one day, and it was hard to put down and very easy to pick back up again.

That being said, I’m not sure that it’s as plot heavy as it’s advertised. It’s definitely *story* heavy, but Diem doesn’t have any strong goals that she works toward throughout the book. This felt like a lot of exposition, and that’s fine since it’s the first book in a four book series, but I wanted her to have a little more agency.

I will definitely be continuing with this series! 4 stars!

Thank you to Atria and NetGalley for the eARC and the opportunity to share an honest, voluntary review.

I was a bit put down by the reviews and thought it would be a DNF but im glad i gave it a chance it was way better than I expected and i will be reading the next book in no time.

FMC is a bit annoying on the beginning but at the 60% it gets better and her decision makes more sense and it fits her personality more. I think the trick in understanding her decisions is to see her as a sheltered child trying to make her own way in the world and just getting slapped by life.

MMC ist amazing, love Luther no more to say.
The book itself could be at least a 100 pages shorter. Especially begging was very very slow could have been a bit shortened at around 50% things starts to move forward.
If you pick up this book and its struggling in continuing or you are feeling put down by some reviews just pass the 60% mark it gets better I promise.

I’ll admit I was apprehensive to start this book, well actually the series, because of the mixed reviews out there, but after reminding myself why I love to read I decided to read it. (Also, I was suffering from fomo because Jess was reading it and I didn’t want to miss out).

My thoughts - Spark of the Everflame is the first book in Penn Cole’s Kindred saga series. I really enjoyed this book! I listened to the audiobook as well as read the ebook, which is one of my favourite ways to read books. Being the first in a series, this book set us up with the world we’re in, introduced us to some of the main characters and their stories, built tension with all the problems in this world and left us with many many questions at the end of the book.

I really enjoyed the pace of the story, I struggled with Diem as she was trying to make decisions based on the information she has, which was all lies. I loved the tension between Luther and Diem. I’m very intrigued by Sorae and I really enjoyed the scenes with Teller as well.

While I understand Henri and the guardians’ thought process and ‘this is war’ attitude, I did not like the way they do things, which was probably very intentional by the author for setting us up for what’s to come.

I’m excited to jump into the next book.

I enjoyed this so much! The narrator was fantastic. I usually prefer multiple POVs, so I was worried I was going to get bored with just one, but I was far from bored.

I got sucked in quickly and thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Diem is a flawed character, but one you root for. You know that in her heart she just wants to do the right thing, but she learns quickly that in life there is no easy solution.

There are real, high stakes. You feel her rage and desperation, alongside with her genuine compassion and empathy for those around her. She is trapped in a system, and seeing her seek a way to break free is as frustrating as it is exhilarating.

The ending absolutely had me on the edge of my seat, ready to jump right into book 2. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions and I’m excited to see where Diem’s story leads.

This was really good! More focused on fantasy than romance so it's not a spicy one - although the romance is still good with a healthy amount of tension and steam. Strong FMC but reckless. This story really sees her grow and struggle with trying to find her path in life. Interesting world and political dynamics. Morally grey everywhere. Solid plot, however, I did find it a bit predictable. There's a lot of repetition and the foreshadowing is more direct than I think was intended, making it feel a bit like telling and overexplanation. Overall though, a great read!

Overall I enjoyed this book and will read the sequel. However it definitely had its lower points. Some plot points were very easy to suss out and the protagonist gave off very YA vibes at times. She was tough but also made some really stupid choices.

I de.vow.ered this book! Great character building, great world building, great plot. The main character Diem is a fierce, fiery woman and I so enjoyed her attitude and wit. I am hoping for a bit more romance building between the characters in the next book, because while I got throughout the book that
Luther likes Diem and that Henri wants to marry Diem
I didn't feel a ton of connection to the romantic aspect of this storyline. Which isn't a bad thing but if we're going to go down that road then I'd like to know a bit more about their feelings towards each other before we get to the handsy handsy stuff. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Spark of the Everflame and I cannot wait to get my hands on Glow of the Everflame!

Good setup for a series but needed more character development. Particularly between characters. The love interests were weakly incorporated and the main character was brash and obnoxious. I wish she would have been developed more in terms of her intelligence. But the storyline is good and I will be reading the second book in the series.
