I have so many mixed feelings on this book!!

I feel like so much was left unexplored and underdeveloped, but I think the author somewhat did it on purpose? I think this is going to be a slow burn in all aspects and I'm hoping that in the end this slow beginning is going to be worth it.

Spark of the Everflame (Kindred's Curse Book 1)
Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25
Format: Kindle/Audiobook

“Don’t choose a mediocre life for a mediocre man. Go be exceptional. If he’s worth it, he won’t judge you. And if he’s really the one, he’ll come along for the ride.”

“What if our story isn’t over, Diem Bellator? What if it’s only beginning?”

------------------------------------------------

Spark of the Everflame is probably the fastest I have ever read a fantasy book. I really felt Hunger Games/Fourth Wing vibes. While there was world building, it was fairly easy to understand and only added when needed. The characters and plot took center stage in this story, and I had fun guessing what would happen next. I will say that the plot was fairly predictable. However, the ending did get me! I did not see that coming. Even though there was a predictable nature to the book, I absolutely could not put it down and just had to keep reading.

The characters of this story had me in my feels. The fmc, Diem is strong and courageous. However, at times, I found her to be rather niave and impulsive even when she knew she shouldn't be. I am looking forward to see her character grow throughout the series and really come into her own. Henri, Henri, Henri. I thought I liked you, but no. At this time, I do not. Luther, now I am here for him! I want more scenes with him, and I sincerely hope he's included more in the next book.

Overall, I am very excited about this series and look forward to continuing it with book 2.

I’ll admit I was apprehensive to start this book, well actually the series, because of the mixed reviews out there, but after reminding myself why I love to read I decided to read it. (Also, I was suffering from fomo because Jess was reading it and I didn’t want to miss out).

My thoughts - Spark of the Everflame is the first book in Penn Cole’s Kindred saga series. I really enjoyed this book! I listened to the audiobook as well as read the ebook, which is one of my favourite ways to read books. Being the first in a series, this book set us up with the world we’re in, introduced us to some of the main characters and their stories, built tension with all the problems in this world and left us with many many questions at the end of the book.

I really enjoyed the pace of the story, I struggled with Diem as she was trying to make decisions based on the information she has, which was all lies. I loved the tension between Luther and Diem. I’m very intrigued by Sorae and I really enjoyed the scenes with Teller as well.

While I understand Henri and the guardians’ thought process and ‘this is war’ attitude, I did not like the way they do things, which was probably very intentional by the author for setting us up for what’s to come.

I’m excited to jump into the next book.

Interesting characters and enjoyable female lead. Primarily character focused and plot was a little slow, but pace overall was moderate. Plot was a little predictable but characters are definitely not black and white so there’s plenty of potential for plot twists! Overall pretty enjoyable :).

I enjoyed this so much! The narrator was fantastic. I usually prefer multiple POVs, so I was worried I was going to get bored with just one, but I was far from bored.

I got sucked in quickly and thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Diem is a flawed character, but one you root for. You know that in her heart she just wants to do the right thing, but she learns quickly that in life there is no easy solution.

There are real, high stakes. You feel her rage and desperation, alongside with her genuine compassion and empathy for those around her. She is trapped in a system, and seeing her seek a way to break free is as frustrating as it is exhilarating.

The ending absolutely had me on the edge of my seat, ready to jump right into book 2. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions and I’m excited to see where Diem’s story leads.

Really hard to put down. I liked Diem as a main character - while reckless and often foolish, she wasn’t afraid to stand up to anyone and it came from care for others.

The Romance part felt a bit of a cliche with a contrast between male love interests, I thought they were both crafted well, and I liked the story had good moral/ethical dilemmas to (literally) war with.

Overall I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next one.
