Read this for a queer book group I’m in. I’m glad I ended up listening to the audiobook because the narrator really set the tone well for the story. This is one of those books that’s all grit, lots of sensory descriptions, rough & tough language, and violence. I enjoyed it enough to be curious about the second one, although I think I lean slightly towards Outlawed by Anna North in terms of queer westerns.

By the end of the first 10% of this book, I already knew that I was going to have to force myself to finish it.

this had some of the best bisexual tension i've ever read! the gender bending! the gay fear in [redacted's] eyes! the only reason it's not a 5 star read is because i didn't love the plot, but i adored the characters and the writing so much it doesn't matter. i highlighted nearly every passage where alma talks about her "in-between"-ness, her not-feminine but not-masculine desires and body, the way she can shapeshift into another person at will. it was delicious!
