'Truly Tyler' by Terri Libenson is a graphic novel in the Emmie and Friends series. This is the fifth novel in the series, but the first one I've read, but I was able to pick up on the characters quite easily.

Tyler is a popular basketball player. Emmie is less popular, but one thing they have in common is they both like art. When they get teamed up for a school project, they decide to collaborate on a graphic novel. As they work together, Tyler is pulled from basketball practice and his friends tease him about his new friend. His father also has his own expectations about what Tyler should be doing.

This is a really great story about finding your own way and liking what you like without the pressure of friends or family. There are three different art styles in this book as the chapters alternate between Tyler, Emmie and the comic book they are creating. I really liked this story and thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

I appreciated that Terri Libenson said in her acknowledgments that she struggled to write Truly Tyler from Tyler's perspective...because I never would have believed that. I'm sure I've said it a million times, but Terri Libenson is truly so spectacular at capturing the middle school experience. Truly Tyler read like a more realistic High School Musical. I really enjoyed it and I'm excited to see the Emmie and Friends series branching out into new characters!

i just couldnt get through it it was soooo boring ive read izzy emmie and brianna but this one was just sad not as in someone died but as in there was no fun stuff he was lame and his friends were just terrible im srry but if i rated this it would be a one since it comes from a good line of books but yea wouldnt recommend it bye

Cute book about being true to oneself. I enjoy all the Emmy books. I will say this falls in between graphic novel and illustrated novel category. I love the illustrations in this book overall. Thanks Edelweiss for an ARC. 3.5 stars
