Wow, this book was amazing. It honestly checks all of the boxes you could possibly want!
The world B. B. Alston has created is unique and interesting with all types of supernatural and paranormal creatures abound are in this world. Having an organization like the Men in Black, the Bureau is a well thought out entity with an intriguing history and way to contain magical beings from the real world. Since this is a middle grade reading level book, most of the fighting happens with stun sticks and propulsion boots. Immersing Amari in this world with the reader is such a great way to explain the nuances a reader would not understand in an organic way rather than forced.
The characters in this book are all well thought out as well. Even the "mean girl" group that harasses Amari throughout all have thoughts, feelings, and character development. Amari is a great example for young readers of Imposter Syndrome. Not believing in yourself and feeling like you live in the shadow of your siblings is a very relatable emotion. Reading Amari work through her imposter syndrome and come out on top is as satisfying as you want it to be.
The writing in this book is phenomenal. While it is written for middle grade readers, the narration rarely talks down to the reader and created an accessible way to talk about social issues. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes supernatural and fantasy books like Artemis Fowl.
