This book is definitely above mediocre, but somewhere below amazing, and mind-blowing.

The best descriptor I have for it is solid. To put it simply, this is a very good book that could end up being a favorite for some people. Personally, it was lacking a shock factor that I particularly enjoy, but the story is constantly driving you forward. Higashino's words flow into unexpected scenarios and emotions. Dots connect where there were no dots to begin with. The author and the translator did an amazing service to this story.

Week 40 Book 63
Devotion of suspect X by Keigo Higashino
Rating: 4/5

This was my first Higashino and boy am I hooked. Although I read the translated English version, I think it was a fantastically written fast paced, murder mystery/thriller book.

TDOSX is a modern day setup that revolves around a family under suspicion for a murder, being solved by Detective Kusanagi, with some help from his Physics Professor friend Yukawa. The plot is a brilliant cat and mouse chase with no dull moments. An easy breezy read, really enjoyable, I definitely recommend.

Even though this is reread, I still gasped at the reveal. I had completely forgotten. >.< Granted, I first read this like over 10 years ago.

A whirlwind of a book that maintains incredible pacing and momentum, only for the sour ending. Up until that moment, I was able to overlook the significant coincidences that formed most of the conflict. However, given how unsatisfying the ending became, those assumptions and coincidences became too glaring. This is the third book I have read now from Higashino, and it is clear there is a pattern of either underutilized or extremely gender stereotypical female characters in his work. Both of those are present in this book and my impression is the author is not sympathetic to their life situations nor interested in women beyond their societal functions as mother, wife, and lover. Unfortunately, this will be the final Higashino book I will be reading.
