A well-written and solidly plotted and paced book, with resonant family dynamics and an appealing central romantic relationship, supported by interesting portrayal of work dynamics in a Hollywood TV production. I found the third act a little weak in terms of character motivation, but it's still the best romance I've read this year.

This was a pretty standard contemporary romance tbh, like nothing groundbreaking or very unique. I did think the premise was interesting but I don’t think it matters how the characters are introduced to each other if you’re going to do the same tropes that all the other contemporary romances do. Really was not a fan of the sister’s suicide arc, I think it added very little to the story despite it being advertised as the main differentiating factor in this book. Was not very developed at all, and that may be the point of the story because it is focusing on the feelings of people who are left behind in the aftermath of a suicide, but idk it just fell flat to me.
I did really like how much Grant’s character was developed compared to the male leads of other books like this, he felt like a real participant in the romance instead of just a “man written by a woman” romantic fantasy object. I also liked that the 3rd act breakup was actually in the third act and we got to see the relationship redevelop after it instead of just a haphazard happily ever after.

Would have rated it higher but the last few chapters were tough. It’s also hard to root for the love story between people in these circumstances? It also feels more like lust than love.

Absolutely a beautiful story. I picked this book up a while ago because it’s hard to find books with pink covers! Little did I know. Absolutely sucked into this little story about an author that has history with the TV Show writer. It’s not all fun and games, it’s slow burn, it’s an emotional level ten, but it is ridiculously beautiful with the healing that these two give each other. *chef’s kiss*

I hate the “quirky” nicknames romance couples give each other. “Crackerjack” might be the worst yet ffs.

I hated the formatting choice of the random italics.

Also I think I just hate straight men in general? But that’s a problem for me and my therapist.

I enjoyed the characters, but I struggled picturing the blocking (for lack of a better word) of various scenes, like "... as Helen flounces onto the couch.... tossing her legs across the couch cushions casually... He nudges her over and sits on the opposite end of the couch instead, so her head is next to his thigh." Wait, what? When did her head end up anywhere near where a thigh would be? Since when does "flounce" mean she's lying down?
I also felt like there wasn't enough tying them together beyond their shared history and their short term working together. Show them having some shared interests? Yes,
Grant has a panic attack where Helen is helpful, but really Grant helps himself and she's just there... we never see her usher him through one the way his ex did.

As a big sister, this book made me cry. There were some absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking moments.

The reviews for this book are so harsh and I truly don’t get it. First of all, this is not a second chance romance: the two MC barely knew each other in high school let alone had any romance between them. Simply going to the same school (and being linked by the tragedy that occurred then) is not qualification for second chance romance. This is just two people with a complicated past coming together to overcome said past.

This book is told in dual pov and it switches mid chapter, which I think was aided by the great narration. I think it also lended to this reading like a movie (which makes sense since the author is a screenwriter). I’m not sure why people are so averse to this.

People think it’s insta love? Or was too fast?????? I… no. The only thing I can think of is that because the POVs are not chapter long maybe it reads as if it’s moving faster plot wise because the pov switches more often?! But I am extremely averse to instalove and this was not that. I thought the romance was so well done and hot 🥵 yes there is (good!!) spice.

So why not 5 stars?: mild spoilers
there is a third act breakup which is heavily forecasted based on the circumstances, and yet it still was hard to read. And it does drag on a tad, I just personally prefer either no breakup or like an easily resolved one. But I am a little forgiving considering the circumstances. And after it’s resolved the ending felt a little rushed.

This book also deals heavily with first generation American children dynamics with their parents. And I thought that was handled with care and thoughtfulness.

Overall I think this is a really beautiful romance that deals with grief at it’s core so maybe it’s not for everyone but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
