“But love doesn’t always have to be about the happy ending. Love can be about beginnings, too.”
I honestly liked this book more than I thought I was going to. The slang that was used I had to push past it because our FMC literally says “whatevs” but it was honestly a heartwarming retelling of a christmas carol. The best way i can describe it is it’s like a disney channel original movie but in book form. I will not be elaborating. Honestly I would recommend this to anyone looking for a sweet Christmas book to read.

I have … issues with the ending of this book.

I did enjoy the first ~40 % of it, it was a fun read and a nice change from what I've read lately. Then I started to think about what would happen with Holly, what was HER endgame? And how I felt about that.

And I have to admit that I feel a bit icky about a 23 year-old living in a 17 year-old's body? With her life? And like, the world changes pretty fast these days, how do you handle going back six years in terms of technology's advancement, political change, fashion … it's a lot.

Also, the fact that Holly's dad's production company was called GCP, which was also the acronym for Holly's work title, and that there was NO CONNECTION??? Nah.

I was ready to give this book a 4 during the first 30-40 %. Then I finished it.

Very happy she didn't end up with Ethan though, because ending up with him after scamming him for several months would have been even more icky than the "23 yo in a 17 yo's body" thing.

I have been a long time Goodreads review reader. In fact, beginning in middle school, I started to base my reading choices on the first few reviews I glimpsed when I searched for the book on here. With that being said, I have never written a review, not in maybe 8 years of religiously relying on the community to guide my reading choices, but I am officially here to defend The Afterlife of Holly Chase.

Hand's writing just has a way of pulling me in, and the way the characters interact reminds me of a well crafted sitcom. I came into this book expecting a light vacation read, but quickly found myself invested in the character that is Holly Chase. I will admit, I nearly quit the book in the first few pages because her personality was just *that* revolting, but I am so glad I kept reading. Does she ever truly change? I think that is a matter of perception, but I will say that, in my opinion, she became likable once her personality sort of shifted from just nasty and mean to sarcastic and exhausted. The introduction of Ethan also made me eye roll to the grave, but the way Hand develops the characters is something beautiful in and of itself. And that twist? Perhaps I was a bit more emotionally invested in the novel than I anticipated.

I found this novel at a local library and will, on this rare momentous occasion, be buying a copy of this book for my shelves because I really did enjoy it that much. I can see why some people may just add it to their DNF piles, but I say this one is a solid 4.5 for the simple fact that it was well-done and had me picking it back up until I'd torn through it.

The whole time I was reading this all i could think was "What in the world am I reading?" Yet, it was an oddly addicting book. For a holiday book it wasn't too cheesy, and I found it the perfect companion to studying "A Christmas Carol" in school.
