This wowed me! I've been hearing great things for a while, and it didn't disappoint. This is the perfect graphic novel for me: deep and emotionally resonant story, lovely character-focused art, and a page count long enough to feel novelistic. It's warm and complicated enough not to be predictable, even centered somewhat around romance. I enjoyed the extensive cast of characters that were given space to be so much (quirky, frustrating, complicated, sweet, kind, alive) without a moralizing pressure to be fixed or solved by the end. It's another excellent story centered on teens but by no means lacking relevance to adults in terms of the personal growth the characters experience. And my god, by the time
the two dragons kissed each other in the final performance, I died. PERFECT culmination of humor (in the audience witnessing the note being passed through the dragon costume mouths) and emotional catharsis (the two characters reuniting).
I loved this and will recommend it!

What can I say? I'm never disappointed in a Gene Luen Yang book and this was no exception. It was fantastic! It's been awhile since I flew thru a book but I really flew thru this one. A good mix of slice-of-life and a little bit of supernatural mixed in.

Not my fave Gene Luen Yang. 100% young adult story with semi-predictable romance. I actually read it a second time because it felt like he was trying to get across some complicated themes like how to find love even if you come from a family where love didn't prosper and how to date...as a teenage girl...in an age of no commitments...and then random Catholic culture! And lots of Vietnamese culture! Overall I left feeling like the author had wanted to grapple with some tough ideas, but had to serve the arc of the young adult romance novel and so we ended with this as a result.

I love the evolution of the St. Valentine character as Val grows up and her self perception changes. I love that ballet became lion dancing and I enjoyed the inclusion of multiple traditions of lion dancing

Val's family is very messy but I really appreciated the non-nuclear family representation. The whole family needs to work on their communication. I also appreciated seeing Jae's and Les's families and how every family has their own challenges.

The art was very good, especially for the dancing. I enjoyed seeing the movements that happen inside the costume. The cover and chapter title pages are stunning.

This was a really long book and I still read it in one sitting and would read more

Everyone needs a friend like Ed, bro.
