80% of this book was excellent, but in amongst all the goodness was the author being generally insufferable (and also incorrect on silly things - the Getty is not "the only true museum" on a list of libraries that also includes the Morgan in NYC). He also seems to be a bit confused in who he thinks his audience is. Still an enjoyable read.

this was mostly a pretty fun and interesting read. I enjoyed that the audiobook was narrated by the author, who is clearly passionate about his work. I didn't always enjoy some of his asides about the places he went to, which sometimes came off as judgy and superficial in contrast to the deep dives on the manuscripts.

I took a long, long time to read this but it was an absolutely delight to read about these deeply fascinating manuscripts and about the whole work of medieval manuscript studies.
