kinda stupid back and forth between tarturus and the normal realm so that he can heal. then i had to sit through a sex scene i could care less about. couldnt it just say she had sex with him without all the details. i literally almost stopped reading completely because it annoyed me so much.

This better not be the last of these stories/books the first two were awesome and the characters were well developed. I felt totally as if I knew the female lead character mostly when she met up with the male lead character. Numerous and places and tearful in others.

I have so many mixed feelings about this book and series. I was really starting to enjoy this, the Nosoi were interesting and different but the ending was so rushed and I feel like Kristin could have got more out of the Nosoi than she's chosen to. Kristin's writing has matured in this book compared to Amber Smoke but it still feels juvenile and very basic at times - the story she's trying to tell is a good one, but it could have done with some work. I'll probably read the next one eventually but I'll be in no rush once it's released, I doubt I'll buy the novella either... I'm really not very interested in a cheesey love story.

Thanks Netgalley & Diversion Books for allowing me to read & review Scarlet Rain.

Kristin Cast sure knows her way around Greek Mythology! This story has a modern day feel & takes place in Tulsa, but is meshed with ancient Greek Mythology. I had so much fun reading Scarlet Rain! This is the second book in The Escaped series, I recommend you read the first book Amber Smoke before jumping into Scarlet Rain.

The storyline was quite provocative, especially with the secondary characters Bridget & James. I felt as if they stole the show from the main-characters Eva and Alek! I would have liked to have seen more relationship building between Eva and Alek, the chemistry was there but the swoon-worthy scenes were few & far between.

The concept of the Nosoi was completely original and really added an exciting layer of suspense to the story! Imagine the movie The Happening + 28 Days Later. Yeah, the Nosoi don't play around! I would have liked to have seen just a little bit more into their origins, but overall I enjoyed this layer of the book.

The very best part of this book is the ending. Goodness gracious, my exact words were along the lines of “Oh Shit!” Okay, I know this book is new but I ALREADY NEED THE NEXT BOOK!!

While I did thoroughly enjoy this book, I’m rating it a 3.5 out of 5 stars since I would have liked a bit more romance between Eva & Alek. Also I felt a twinge of second book slump syndrome while reading this. (Not counting the ending, I LOVED THE ENDING!) That being said, I will be highly anticipating the release of the next book in this remarkably original series!

Was struggling to continue reading it and there are way too many good books out there to continue on.

If you like crime stories like CSI and you like fantasy this book is probably right up your alley! It's a page turner and that cliff hanger!!!! The cliffhanger is brutal! I really enjoyed this book. The writing was on point, the storyline never fell flat, and it wasn't super predictable. There was a few places I could guess but not the whole story. I loved the sexy scenes and the mystery of what was affecting the human world. I'm excited to see what comes next.

It was ok, slightly better than the first but I won't be continuing on when the next comes out. I truly believe that if her Mom wasn't who she was that this series would have been picked up. This is geared for younger readers, or it feels that way. I wish the author the best, but I doubt I'll read anything from her moving forward.

First off, I'd like to add a little disclaimer here: the book was not bad. It wasn't good either, but I do have some reasons for believing that, so bear with me.

It really, really pains me to have to say negative things about Kristin Cast's writing. Honestly. I am a huge fan of the House of Night series, and think that although it does carry a few flaws, it has some great, strong-minded and diverse characters. The Escaped however, really doesn't.

Honestly, when you're reading in either Eva, Bridget or James's POV, they all sound exactly the same. Generic, whiny and above all, they swear ton. Alek's POV is pretty much the only one that kept things slightly interesting, if only for his inability to fit in with the Mortal World and his linguistics.
Now I am in no way against cussing, in fact I think it can be a very cathartic and appropriate thing at times, and I do not condemn it. But it was just way over used in this book. Honestly, in about every other sentence there is a curse word. It started to drive me a bit insane, which is saying something since I usually like it when author's don't censor any kind of cursing in their books.

Spoiler
The story in itself was semi interesting. I enjoyed the concept of the deadly 'scarlet rain' that came to devour people from the inside out, but I also think that it could have played out a lot more interesting than it did. I did admire Bridget's sacrifice at the end, and found it to be one of the most meaningful things that have happened in either books. But yet again, I found the way the ending played out to be extremely anti climactical.

Yet again, we barely got to see any kind of characteristics of Eva. I'm beginning to think that she herself isn't actually the main character and that we should consider Alek and the three furies to be the main characters, since they bring the most depth and interesting traits to the book. I think Eva is just a little shallow and doesn't at all strike me as the strong woman heroine type chick that I usually love reading about (shoutout to Rose from Vampire Academy!)

Also, ahem, I have to mention that little sex scene that went down between Bridget and James. I usually love to devour a good erotic scene in a book. But honestly, that scene, along with all the nonsensical mentioning of baby Jesus and 'calling out to God' just made me cringe and was just a turn off for me. Sorry Kristin, better let your mom do the sex scene writing (aka Goddess Summoning series)!

I am however, intrigued as to how the story will continue, especially with that mysterious phone call that Eva got. I really really hope for more character development and more of a climax when it comes to the plot.

This was just OK for me. My favorite character is not actually either of the main characters, but Bridget, the best friend. She cracks me up. The first half of the story I was almost ready to DNF it, but it picked up some and I managed to pull thru, and even enjoyed the ending. However, that being said, I don't know whether I will continue with this series.

UPDATE: have decided not to continue on to book 3. The first 2 were just OK and I don't want to read book 3 just because I feel like I need to. DNF the series at this point.
