The early chapters did admittedly feel sluggish for me. HOWEVER, the voice is so strong throughout and Simu has really managed to be charismatic on paper. As an Asian American, I really appreciated reading his narrative. It also made me extremely thankful towards the struggles and sacrifices my family made to immigrate.*
I can’t believe how far Simu has come and I think this was a well-made and entertaining narrative for how he’s pursued his dreams.
*I’m sure people are aware, but just as a BTW, not all Asian American/Canadian/British (diaspora essentially) families are the same. What is true for Simu’s family is not applicable to all Asians. Just had to toss that out there

3.5 stars. Unclear resolution of childhood trauma… I guess that’s how it always goes. Had to cringe thru Simu’s cheesy jokes scattered throughout the book. Didn’t get insight into his ultimate dream of being a marvel superhero :( but good message about Asian representation overall.

This is an awesome story of overcoming hardships while seeking his goal. An extremely important conversation about the racism toward Asians in America.

Okay, so normally I'm not fond of non-fiction at all. I find most biographies and autobiographies tedious and self-promoting.
But this book by Sinu Liu was so different. It was brutally honest, real, and helpful in so many ways. As a caucasian woman married to an ABC husband with a 20-year-old hapa daughter, I knew instantly that this book would be an eye-opener and helpful for me to understand more of the Chinese culture.
I like that this book was so approachable and written so well by Simu Liu. He writes beautifully and should really consider writing MORE books!!
I read this as an ebook from the library as I wasn't sure if it would be self-aggrandizing and braggadocios, but it was humble, beautiful, and inspiring. My hapa daughter and I were at the nail salon and talking about this book. I decided that she needed to have it and read it. I just bought it in hardback for her to read on her break between college semesters!

I loved this book so much. The narrative he provides regarding immigrant families and representation is so important. I really enjoyed the first third of the book when Simu talks about his parents’ childhoods and upbringing, but the whole book was very well written.
