This was a heartwarming, unique story with memorable, multi-dimensional characters. I unfortunately got quite bored in the second half, because
they spend most of it in the same room/corridor.

A beautiful and queer book with great characters. The one thing that holds it back is some uneven plotting and jerky pacing heading in to the final stretch. A lot of coincidence driving to plot as well.

"Translation State" is set not long after the main "Ancillary" trilogy but (despite an appearance from one of the characters from that trilogy) is not directly related. This was a charming book, with some interesting framing of the questions of what we owe to our families (found or related) and how to balance that against our own needs.

Finished Reading my favourite Ann Leckie yet! Just so beautifully handled in its themes, its characters, and its wild and weird alien biology and culture, and with a streak of dark humour and even (sort of) romance to go with it.

This is entirely as interesting and fun as all of Ann Leckie's previous books and it goes in directions that I'd never have expected from the others.

She is also gifted at writing aliens that are truly alien - just about incomprehensible to humans - and not just creatures that are basically like us but maybe a little angrier or something. Similarly her humans think differently from each other.

This rating is probably lower if you haven’t read the original trilogy. And probably higher if you’ve read that recently
