I really only read the last two chapters of this book: the one on fiction and the one on reviewing. Interesting stuff. This edition is from 1997, before Harry Potter, and I'd be interested to see what she has to say about reviewing and children's fiction now. Especially about what we all do on the blogs...

Some info is definitely a bit dated as the book was published in the 90s, but most of it holds up really well and the advice about critically reading children's lit is super useful.

This book would be great for someone who hasn’t read or discussed children’s literature since they were a child, has no experience with kids and books, and/or someone who needs to learn about all the different genres and basic concepts that someone who works in children’s librarianship work with every day. Read it for class. Learned a few nuanced details. 6/10 would nor recommend unless you are completely lost and need to start from zero.

A great textbook for those who have never read a children's book. For those with kids, it is kind of lacking.

Excellent book for anyone who has a responsibility to reviewing and recommending books for children. I found it a great refresher of my graduate courses and the format of the book's presentation of the information was clear and concise. Highly recommended-

Some useful and intriguing information about the many genres of children's book and how to evaluate them, but there was also a lot of dead weight. If you were expecting a book about literary interpretation/criticism, that is not the focus of this book. However, when it comes to an overview to books as a whole and it reviewing children's books, this is a good, general starter.
