I loved this so much. I want to live in this world and hang out with Amari. So excited that we will get more of this series!

Think this is an excellent book for its intended audience. But I felt very frustrated by the rushed ending, scenes changed within a few paragraphs and details which got in the way brushed over. I thought some of the writing was a bit clumsy, things like
being lifted off the ground, looking at the grass beneath her feet and then being lowered to the ground - Just felt messy. Or when Maria is holding two peoples hands and also manages to use her hand to cast a spell - there were a few bits that just didn't make sense or bits which didn't offer detailed enough explanation.
Some of the points in the text felt a little laboured too. That said I enjoyed reading it and think lots of kids would love it.

Such a good middle grade book. I usually get bored easily with a middle grade book but this one kept me interested. I love the world and I am excited to see where this series goes.

Sadly, this was not as enjoyable for me as it apparently was for others. While there were a few unexpected turns, the Big Twist was one I saw coming pretty easily. The supernatural details were piled on one after another without enough depth of description to fully appreciate any of them.

To me it felt very much like it was trying to be an American-style Harry Potter. I liked the parallels between Amari's previous school and the magic school, but again, that didn't really go anywhere, and the "not really fitting in" was done much more effectively in The Hate U Give.
