4 stars even though it took me a month to finish, I did enjoy the concept and the picture the book paints. I listened to a solid half of the book and that really helped

George Orwell’s dystopian novel ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four,’ is an indisputable literary classic that truly stands the test the time. It is simply a crying shame that it has taken me so long to read it in its full glory.

The reason this book stands so well today is perhaps its striking relevance over seventy years later. The concepts of ‘Big Brother’ and the ‘Thought Police’ bare so much significance in our current age of mass and social media dominance. It’s almost bizarre to imagine that this book was written decades before the internet even came into fruition.

Another thing I noted when reading this book, is the vast impact it has had on literature and film as a whole. Having read numerous dystopian books and watched an array of films in this genre; it is evident that ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ is the God Father of modern dystopian fiction. Its influence prevails in works such as ‘The Truman Show,’ ‘The Hunger Games,’ and of course ‘Big Brother.’ The book’s impact has simply transcended across all mass media; real and imagined.

Quite frankly, judging by the current political and technological climate, this novel is showing no signs of ever diminishing in relevance. Kinda scary right?

For three weeks, whenever my sister called and asked me what I was doing, I told her I was listening to 1984. Take that as you will. It takes a Herculean effort to gaslight someone back into the middle ages, but Big Brother does it all
