This is the second book in The Beast and the Bethany series, and I have enjoyed these books thoroughly. This series is described as a combination of Lemony Snicket and Roald Dahl, which I believe is a perfect description. These books are fast paced while still rounding out their loveable characters, and the way the characters evolve is both charming and touching. The story keeps moving and keeps the reader engaged, and I look forward to continuing on when the next book comes out.

The second volume in the saga of the Beast picks up exactly where The Beast and The Bethany left off: Having just defeated The Beast, 511- year old Ebenezer Tweazer and 12-year old Bethany are doing their best to de-Beast their lives and "do good". Unfortunately, "do-gooding" just isn't as easy as you would think. Especially when Claudette, the singing parrot, is not exactly acting like herself, perhaps because she accidentally ate something Beastly?

Ebenezer is finding adjusting to normal life a bit trying and actually finds himself missing the Beast! Bethany is determined to make amends for past pranks but doesn't understand why people must have trouble trusting her change of attitude.

If you love some dark humour, silly fantasy, lots of pranks and a little bit of rudeness these books are heaps of fun!

Recommended for older primary to early high school (8-14) kids who love writers like Roald Dahl, R.L. Stine (of Goosebumps fame), or David Walliams.

Jack Meggitt-Phillips creates brilliant and hilarious characters. I loved this sequel so much-I was laughing but also super involved and worried about how it would end.

First off, the author, Jack Meggitt-Phillips, is absolutely incredible. I have read The Beast and the Bethany to two classes now and it is a major hit! The kids love the hilarious and dark humour and Jack was kind enough to do a zoom call with my class this year – they were delighted and asked many inane (but some excellent) questions!

I absolutely adored this delicious and dark sequel filled with beastly moments! Jack has created a fantastic world with gothic macabre characters who have amazing depth in their morality. Bethany and Ebenezer constantly flit between good and bad choices in such a real way and there are so many dark consequences to their poor decisions! I was hooked in instantly and this familiar world will delight readers of the previous book.

Claudette’s plight and the slow burn of the Beast returning filled me with dreadful anticipation throughout the story. The Beast is such a delightfully evil villain whose cruelty sends proper shivers down my spine – I particularly enjoying reading aloud many of his darker moments from the first book. The depth and backstory we were shown in this story adds more to his complex relationship with Ebenezer and really fleshed all of that out.

A darkly, deliciously laugh out loud tale. 5 out of 5 stars. If the Beast wants to eat a teacher next time, I absolutely volunteer myself.

Thank you so much to The Write Reads for this stop on the blog tour.

Brilliant! Funny, heartwarming and deliciously disgusting. Perfect for fans of Roald Dahl and David Walliams who are wanting to dip their toes in fantasy. This second outing of the despicable duo Bethany (attempting to be a reformed prankster) and Ebenezer (a man who has only cared about his own needs for 500 years) has all the fun and dark humour of the first book, and adds more to the mythology of the beast. The book has a great message about second chances and redemption and will have you giggling out loud.

Overraskende positiv til denne oppfølgeren. Skjønte jo tidlig hva som kom til å skje, men underholdende likevel og Bettina er <3

What I Loved
After devouring The Beast and the Bethany extremely quickly and loving it, I couldn’t hold back from starting Revenge of the Beast straight away! After a long hard day, I couldn’t have asked for a better book to come home to and gobble up and let me tell you this isn’t just for the kiddies. It is such a fun and meaningful book that teaches many valuable lessons such as kindness and giving back but it is also extremely entertaining with beautiful illustrations that help add the story perfectly!

The Story
Just when you thought that was it from the Beast, he strikes back in the most peculiar yet humorously gross way. With a new adventure and the beast even hungrier than before, we get to follow Bethany, Ebenezer and their new Parrot companion, Claudette as they take on a new mystery of why strange things have been happening to all the objects in the 15 story house that the Beast once vomited out.

Along with the beast bashing, do-gooding and spectacular theatre performances, we get more of an understanding of Ebenezer’s past and why he spent so many years serving the Beast. It does tug at the heartstrings when you realize what he’s been through, which we were all probably thinking about since the last book so I’m very glad the author delves into this side of his character. I couldn’t get enough of the story, there is never a dull moment within this book, it’s incredibly fast-paced, upbeat, funny and just a downright delightful read!

The Characters
Bethany is once again the star of the show for me. Even though she is known as a prankster and probably always will be a bit, however, with her desire to do good you can’t help but love and root for her on her journey. It’s incredible to see how much she has grown from the first book, trying to make amends with those who she treated wrong, make new friends and help protect the one person who helped her from the beginning even if he didn’t realise it!

Ebenezer continues to grow on me more and more and after living for 512 years it’s amazing to see him learn and grow to become a better person despite his troubled, sad past. It was a really nice insight to include some of his past as you can clearly see how he has become the person he is. By living as many years as he has, I can imagine it is not easy to change his ways. But, his friendship with Bethany is truly beautiful (when she isn’t calling him names) and so heartwarming they evidently have a big effect on each other.

Ebenezer, as well as the rest of the story and characters, are fabulously enjoyable from start to finish. It will make you wish you could forget what happened and read it all over again!

Overall Thoughts
Overall, The Beast and the Bethany: Revenge of the Beast is a remarkable sequel that lives up to all its entertainingly beastly expectations from the first book. If you’re looking for a quick, easy, laugh out loud read then look no further! Don’t be disappointed if you ate up these two books quickly, because there is more to come for Bethany, Ebenezer and the Beast this year!

Reuniting with Bethany and Ebeneezer was wonderful, especially seeing how much their partnership has evolved from the first book. They were mischievous throughout the book even if they were trying to change their ways and become do-gooders, something that seems to not necessarily go to plan. What was fun was the fact that we got to learn more about Ebeneezer's past and how he first met the Beast. Claudette was great fun as a character and I loved the fact that she could talk and sing! The other characters were also fun and well written and just completed the book for me.

The plot was also fun and engaging and just a brilliant carry-on from the first book, even if once again it ended on a cliffhanger that made me desperate for the next book already. This book was filled with all sorts of hilarious hijinks that Bethany and Ebeneezer got up to on their mission to de-beast their lives and how the Beast slowly derailed their plans to enact his own one, to claim his revenge on Bethany. The illustrations throughout the book helped to bring the story alive and I loved seeing all of the characters as I imagined them in my own head!

The writing was witty and had me laughing out loud! It was such a fun read that is perfect for readers of all ages. Whether you are older and looking for a fun-filled book to keep you entertained or a mischievous kid looking to turn things around just like Bethany. I am so excited for the next book in the series!

I was sent a copy of this book as part of a blog tour in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this sequel to The Beast and the Bethany, and with the way this book ended...there might be a third book in the near future (I can hope).

This is such a fun series about an animal eating monster who wreaks havoc in the lives of two people and their town. I loved in this sequel that our two main characters are trying to live their lives by doing good deeds around the town (although they really don't know what that means or how to go about it.)

The monster is back in quite a strange and weird way, twisting the minds of the town and our characters. He is not lovable, and he sure will make you cringe with his dastardly deeds.
