this book can be summed up in two ideas: 1) when ultranationalism breaks down into nationalism and colonialism breaks down into classism, racism, and misogyny, or The Episode in Which We Accept That the Roots of Systemic Violence and Inequality Are a Lot Fucking Deeper and More Complicated Than We First Thought; 2) when things manage to go from incredibly bad to even worse. or maybe they had to in order to eventually get better? then again, i think that was the thesis we were starting with and look how it turned out. does the human capacity for evil know bounds? don't know, probably not

stuff's looking real dire, so many fucking people have died and are still going to, and i am scared

side notes: i cannot believe this was basically 600 pages of rin being proven wrong, man — and all to culminate in just the most obviously horrific situation possible, too. that was fucking grueling to witness and experience. also this shit with nezha? not cool bro. i've since seen a tiktok that r.f. kuang drew on AtLA characters azula, katara, and zuko (cited from Wikipedia dw, not a fan theory), and i just have to say: i cannot do this again i cannot relive that series' ending with higher stakes i am going to throw up after finishing the next book, huh
