Wotton Major holds a very special feast every 24 years... The Feast of Good Children.
This time at the Feast of Good Children a small boy, Smithson, ate his bit of the Great Cake slowly but didn't found anything in it..
Where could have the silver coin have got to?
This is a beautiful Faery Tale story by none other than master story teller, J.R.R Tolkien!

I got this book as a present when I was 7, long before I knew anything about JRR Tolkien. I don't think I even read the authors name back then, those things didn't seem important, but I loved the book. I almost knew it by heart.
When I rediscovered the book on my shelf, I was truly surprised to see the author's name. I am not a big fan of The Lord of the Rings. It always felt like reading a long historical book, and that's not my preferred genre. However, Smith of Wootton Major is a charming little tale, and I do hope I don’t get too tempted to read it again; I want to keep it as a warm childhood memory. I'm sure that reading it as a grownup would only spoil it.

I got this book for free 6 years ago at a book sale where I was volunteering, and I’m glad I finally read it. Just some Tales, just two country boys doing their thing. Relaxing, twee, other adjectives :)

The last work of fiction published while Tolkien was still alive, Smith of Wootton Major is a sweet farewell from a grand master of mythology and fantasy fiction. The story itself is brief, but layered with dry wit and commentary about embracing life and passing from one generation to the next. I immediately re-read it and found more. This is one I can imagine revisiting from time to time.

these two stories sent me back to being a small kid dreaming about fairies and dragons. it has the same fairy tale charm as the hobbit but with a lighthearted tone and dialogue that feels nostalgic and homey.
once again, tolkien blows me away.
