A really inspiring story, but would be a bit long for younger audiences. I think it would be perfect for a 3rd, 4th, or even 5th grade teacher to read aloud to students. I had heard of Booker T. Washington, but I didn't really know his story. Now I'm even more intrigued!

Biography of Booker T. Washington that focuses on how he created the Tuskegee Institute by literally making the bricks for the first building--they had shacks and a barn until it was built. Goes from his childhood to the founding of Tuskegee. All quotes are cited and sourced. Beautiful watercolor/pencils illustrations; I liked how the front cover shows the young BTW arriving at school, a dilapidated shack, and on the back cover, the illustration is BTW proudly standing in front of the completed Institute.
