I had such high hopes for this book. I should have seen the plot twist coming a mile away and I didn't, because I didn't think the author would have gone down that particular type of edgelord route.

"Religion is the real disease!!!1!" is such an old, tired, new atheist brainworm-induced trope. Like, you can just say conservative evangelicalism. You can say it. Don't throw other religions under the bus, too, and then fail to even portray them beyond vague mentions. And the way it was written in this book felt one step away from a particular brand of ecofascist brainrot. Fucking hate that shit.

But the first half of the book was pretty enjoyable.

Aside from some TW for animal harm/death (from other animals and humans), which you can predict from the synopsis, I absolutely loved this book!
The apocalypse, with fully fleshed out animal protagonists, beautiful writing, important issues tackled within the story, and a bit of creepiness and horror thrown in. What's not to like?! I can't wait to read more of this series.
