I got less than one chapter in before deciding this book was not for me. Too…something? Unsettling, I think.

I had such high hopes for this book. I should have seen the plot twist coming a mile away and I didn't, because I didn't think the author would have gone down that particular type of edgelord route.
Spoiler"Religion is the real disease!!!1!" is such an old, tired, new atheist brainworm-induced trope. Like, you can just say conservative evangelicalism. You can say it. Don't throw other religions under the bus, too, and then fail to even portray them beyond vague mentions. And the way it was written in this book felt one step away from a particular brand of ecofascist brainrot. Fucking hate that shit.
But the first half of the book was pretty enjoyable.

Aside from some TW for animal harm/death (from other animals and humans), which you can predict from the synopsis, I absolutely loved this book!
The apocalypse, with fully fleshed out animal protagonists, beautiful writing, important issues tackled within the story, and a bit of creepiness and horror thrown in. What's not to like?! I can't wait to read more of this series.

Confession: I'm a cat person and bought the book for the cover and the weird premise.

The book has a fun premise that quickly falls into a book version of a B-horror/suspense movie. While I did enjoy some of the sci-fi elements in this book, the writing was cringe at times (but also in line with the whole B-movie feel). Required a lot of suspension of belief. Not a big fan of the buildup to the ending and found it rushed. Characters are relatively flat, and the author spends too much time in the middle and not enough on the end.

A tale dictating the rise of animal and the fall of humans, Mort(e) is a new and interesting take on the apocalypse. It’s a tale with the message that love can triumph, especially in the bleakest times, and it was interesting to see that none of the presented societies (humans, ants, and the surface animals), could ever get things right - all these societies, in a way, were fatally flawed. Repino takes great care in laying out the conflict and building this new world, although there were some very dense moments where I struggled to get through, especially during some of the ant scenes.
