I got less than one chapter in before deciding this book was not for me. Too…something? Unsettling, I think.

I had such high hopes for this book. I should have seen the plot twist coming a mile away and I didn't, because I didn't think the author would have gone down that particular type of edgelord route.
Spoiler"Religion is the real disease!!!1!" is such an old, tired, new atheist brainworm-induced trope. Like, you can just say conservative evangelicalism. You can say it. Don't throw other religions under the bus, too, and then fail to even portray them beyond vague mentions. And the way it was written in this book felt one step away from a particular brand of ecofascist brainrot. Fucking hate that shit.
But the first half of the book was pretty enjoyable.

Confession: I'm a cat person and bought the book for the cover and the weird premise.

The book has a fun premise that quickly falls into a book version of a B-horror/suspense movie. While I did enjoy some of the sci-fi elements in this book, the writing was cringe at times (but also in line with the whole B-movie feel). Required a lot of suspension of belief. Not a big fan of the buildup to the ending and found it rushed. Characters are relatively flat, and the author spends too much time in the middle and not enough on the end.
