Het is fantastisch om te zien hoe de titel van dit boekje vertaald werd. Het oorspronkelijke Facsímil, de populaire benaming voor de Prueba de Aptitud Académia, een toelatingstoets voor de universiteit in Chili, heet in het Nederlands Begrijpend lezen en in het Engels Multiple Choice; ik ben zeer te vinden voor die Nederlandse vertaling. (Een Franse versie heb ik niet meteen gevonden.)
Begrijpend lezen is een ludiek tussendoortje, waar veel meer in zit dan op het eerste gezicht lijkt. Aan de hand van multiple choice vragen, laat Zambra uitschijnen alsof de lezer een keuze heeft tussen de verschillende antwoorden op de vragen die in het boek worden gesteld, maar naarmate we in het boek vorderen, wordt duidelijk dat Zambra een eigenzinnige agenda heeft waaraan niet valt te ontsnappen. Begrijpend lezen is een experiment dat evengoed een prozaïsch als een poëtisch instrument is om een bepaalde ethiek aan te reiken die net zo subtiel als onvermijdelijk is.

I really loved this. The format is wild but the writing is absolutely beautiful and very thought provoking. I recommend giving it a chance despite the bizarre test format.

Clever concept, well executed. I usually like short novels, but this one was a bit thin even for my tastes. it is definitely a biting commentary on aspects of Chilean culture and society that are not well known to me.

I have really been into experimental shorter form litfic recently. This is a Chilean author and the book is written in the same format as one of their college entrance exams. I think the third section was my favorite, but the last two sections had a lot more meat and things to say about the politics and culture of Chile.

Very innovative book designed like a standardized test. It is challenging as the questions require the reader to think about whether certain answers should be combined or eliminated. Other reviewers found this a quick read. I did not as I felt compelled to consider all the options.
