I have two pet peeves with this book that I couldn't get over while reading:
1. Idk what Publishers Weekly is on, but an immortal woman living linearly through 300 years is not time travel. This is not a time travel story.
2. The blurb in the book says the present-day timeline is in 2012, but in the book it's actually 2007.
These are both small things, but they felt like kind of lazy mistakes.

That's not the reason why I gave 3 stars though, the book is kind of meh. Throughout the story we don't feel that the antagonist as bad as the main character feels, we hear about the bad things he does, but the emotion is not there. Also, what is his motivation? Is he bad for sake of being bad? What does he do when he's not after Bess?
The time we spend on Bess past feels like a waste of time, the story is always the same: Bess is happy then Gideon shows up and she disappears again.
